LECTICA®

What is Lectica?

Lectica is a computerized developmental assessment system that provides assessments of developmental level in a wide range of knowledge domains. It is the first computerized developmental assessment system [scoring system] for texts; a unique, scientifically validated instrument that produces assessments of developmental level in a number of knowledge domains.

Lectica's algorithm was identified by analyzing the grammatical structure of thousands of texts scored with the Lectical Assessment System (LAS). Scoring with Lectica has been shown to be as reliable as scoring with the LAS.

Because Lectica must be calibrated for each application, it is not yet practical for use in small scale studies.

How can Lectica® be used?

Like the LAS, Lectica can be used:

  • to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions designed to promote cognitive development;
  • to track student development from year to year;
  • to trace conceptual development;
  • in comparative research on conceptual development; and
  • in research on developmental processes.

Lectica has two advantages over the LAS:

  1. it is entirely objective, and
  2. it can dramatically reduce the cost of scoring very large numbers of assessments.
